There are a few things in my life that I am extremely passionate about. My Family, Coaching Football, Indiana University, Cartooning/Art and Music. One of my most favorite things in this world to do is scan the internet for great new artist I otherwise might not hear or hear about here in my small town in Indiana. I enjoy the opportunity to tell others about certain artist I find and share what I consider to be great music. IMHO there just isn’t enough avenues to hear the great new artist out today. We all know how linear the stations are on the dial in our cars or on the television. Im thankful to anyone how offers up some indy or local music for me to check out or hands me something to listen to.
So, in honor of my love of music I give you my Artist Of The Year!
Initially embraced as “the Southern Strokes” for their resurrection and reinvention of Dixie-styled rock & roll, Kings of Leon steadily morphed themselves into an experimental rock outfit during the 2000s. The Tennessee-bred quartet debuted in 2003 with the Holy Roller Novocaine EP, whose blend of raw, unpolished boogie rock was further explored on their debut full-length, Youth & Young Manhood. Kings of Leon experienced immediate popularity in the U.K. (where they would later enjoy platinum album sales, despite a persistently lukewarm reception at home). It was the band’s sophomore effort, 2004’s Aha Shake Heartbreak, that made them European stars, with three songs cracking the U.K. singles charts. The album saw an American release in February 2005, and Kings of Leon toured the country alongside U2 before retreating to work on their third effort. The darker, more expansive Because of the Times followed in 2007. Featuring production from Ethan Johns (who had helmed the band’s previous releases as well), the album proved to be the band’s biggest release, debuting at number 25 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and topping the album charts in the U.K., Ireland, and New Zealand. Kings of Leon returned the following year with Only by the Night, another expansive album whose lead single, “Sex on Fire,” gave the band its first number one single in the U.K.

Parker Gispert (vocals/guitar), Julian Dorio (drums), and Hank Sullivant (bass) create the rollicking indie rock sounds of the Whigs. With a jaunty mix of Westerberg-like style and a heartfelt country disposition, the Whigs played their first shows while attending the University of Georgia. Additional opening slots for the likes of the Killers, Franz Ferdinand, and the Futureheads quickly followed for the young trio, thus leaving their 2005 debut album, Give ‘Em All a Big Fat Lip, to be picked up by ATO Records. Word quickly spread about the Athens-based group, with Rolling Stone hailing them as one of the “10 Artists to Watch” in 2006. That same year, Sullivant exited the band to pursue a solo career as Kuroma; he was eventually replaced by Tim Deaux. With a new lineup in place, the Whigs traveled to Los Angeles in 2007 to begin work on their sophomore album, eventually announcing its completion that October. Mission Control was released in CD and vinyl formats in January 2008, and the band supported its release with a series of late-night TV performances and tour dates alongside the Drive-By Truckers.
